Behind rigid bars,
my limbs are bound
by chains that wound
guess what i did….
i didn’t kill
i believed,

In ours land
believing is the crime
for the ultimate penalty
very slow death
for believing in freedom.

Look at my guard
watching over
day and night
what he earns not enough
to feed one of his wives
he thinks am the prisoner
he is a free man.

Hear what they say…
am on hunger strike
yes, am hungry
but tell me my friend
what is better,
hunger or freedom?

I don’t hunger for food
my family does
they expect it
from a prisoner
who is hungry
for freedom,

If they let me out
i wont stop believing
your guess is right
they’ll bring me back
am hungry, but resolute
will only eat freedom

They strive to feed me
with ‘plenty’ of their food
that i don’t hunger for
so tell me my friend
how will i eat?
a meal unblessed!

  1. This brings to mind something that I was talking to a friend about just yesterday. I don’t know if you are familiar with C.S.Lewis’s ” The Horse and His Boy” but on recognising the Lion ( freedom) the Horse says ‘You’re so beautiful. You may eat me if you like. I’d rather be eaten by you than fed by anyone else.” So the Lion is freedom and anyone else is those who are ‘not free’ . We do need to be careful to only feed on what we believe in and not be tempted by what others think is right for us. I love the way you express this in your poem. Thanks for sharing.
